Important January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The start of the new year marks fresh deadlines and responsibilities for individual taxpayers. January 2026 is pivotal for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and thorough tax planning. Gear up for what the month demands and strategize effectively.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Consultation

With the onset of the tax season, booking your tax preparation appointment early is crucial. Don’t wait until calendars fill up. Ensuring early consultations can streamline your tax filing journey, allowing for a stress-free process.

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline

If you’re employed in a tip-based job and accrued over $20 in tips during December, you must report these earnings to your employer by January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement with necessary details, such as your signature, personal information, employer's name, reporting period, and the total tips received.

Employers are responsible for withholding FICA taxes and income tax on reported tips. Should your regular wages fall short to cover these withholdings, your employer will note the uncollected tax in box 8 of your W-2. This amount must be settled when you file your annual return.

January 15 - Final Estimated Tax Payment

Your last opportunity to make your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year is January 15. Missing this deadline necessitates filing your 2025 tax return and clearing any dues by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Adjustments for Weekends & Holidays:

Should a due date coincide with a weekend or federal holiday, it’s extended to the next feasible business day.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:
